Opt-outs, Opt-ins or Family Add-ons can be done during a specified period at the beginning for the Fall semester: Thursday September 17, 2020 to Wednesday September 30, 2020 at 4pm.

New eligible Winter students can opt-in or add family during a specified period at the beginning of the Winter semester: Monday January 18, 2021 to Friday January 29, 2021 at 4pm

The September opt-out deadline is September 30, 2020 at 4pm.

Only students with existing, equivalent extended health and dental plans are eligible to opt out of the Douglas Students’ Union Health and Dental Plan. You must have proof of alternate coverage.

PLEASE NOTE: that the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP) is not an extended health and dental plan and therefore does not qualify as equivalent coverage.


Log in to your Douglas College online account
  > Select “Registration”
  > Select “Medical/Dental opt-out”
  > Click “Continue”
  > Select your benefits carrier and enter your plan number

This will trigger a credit to your account once your benefits carrier has been verified.

The opt-out process must be completed each year that you are assessed the Health and Dental Plan fee.


For new students on the plan the electronic myBenefits card will not be available until October 16th. For more info or to obtain a paper card please visit one of the DSU offices.

The myBenefits Card is an important piece of identification that will ease access to your benefits. All eligible students must complete the myBenefits Card Registration Form. This multi-purpose card provides your policy information for submission of claims at both the Pharmacy and the Dental Office.

To obtain your myBenefits Card you must first register for BC Fair Pharmacare. Once your registration is completed and you have received your registration number you must complete the myBenefits Card Registration Form.

Please note, your BC CareCard number is NOT your BC Fair Pharmacare registration number. Please use the link provided to complete this step BEFORE submitting your application.

 

 Non BC Residents: if you are not a permanent resident of BC you must still fill out the registration form providing your home province or country in place of the Fair Pharmacare registration number.

If you would like to pick up your myBenefits Card directly from the DSU Office please download and complete the Benefits Card Registration Form and take it with you to the office

Downloading the myBenefits Card does not confirm eligibility or benefits coverage. please contact The DSU Office to confirm your enrolment in the plan.

Opt In?

Nine Credits or More (Mandatory)
All students enrolled in nine credits or more in the Fall semester are automatically enrolled in the plan.

Fewer than Nine Credits and minimum of 3 credits (Optional Opt-in)
Part-time students enrolled in a minimum of 3 credits but fewer than nine credits in the Fall Semester may enroll in the plan, provided they complete the enrollment process and pay the required $425 premium prior to the applicable deadline.

It is the student's responsibility to complete the Individual Enrollment form and provide payment of the applicable fee(s) prior to the deadline.

If a student has successfully completed an opt-out but requires re-enrolment into the plan there are 2 opportunities to do so:

1) Upon Program Start Date Anniversary: For students starting in September the anniversary would be the following September prior to the applicable deadline. For students starting in January the anniversary would be the following January prior to the applicable deadline.

2) Lifestyle Change: There are certain circumstances known as lifestyle changes that allow a student to make changes to their enrolment status within 30 days of the change date. Lifestyle changes include; getting married, meeting the twelve-month co-habitation requirement for common law status, birth/adoption of a child, meeting provincial plan residency requirements and losing their alternate coverage.

Students who lose their comparable coverage may opt back into the Student Benefit Plan(s), if they are within 30 days of losing coverage. If a student has lost their comparable coverage, they must provide documentation of loss by submitting a letter from either the insurance carrier or employer stating the date coverage ends, the carrier name and policy number.

Student Health and Dental Plan coverage is provided to eligible students automatically, except in certain circumstances where a student’s enrolment status excludes them from automatic inclusion by the institution or due to a previous waiver on file. To enroll in the Student Health and/or Dental plan(s), complete the sections below and submit this form. The Student will then be contacted by the Benefit Plan Office, via an email notification, of any required supporting documents and fees. All supporting document(s) and fees must be received by the applicable deadline for the enrolment process to be completed.

Family Add On

Coverage provided through the Student Health and Dental Plan can be extended to a spouse and/or dependent(s) each policy year. To add eligible dependent(s) complete the sections below and submit this form. The Student will be contacted via email by the Benefit Plan Office of any required supporting documents and fees. All supporting document(s) and fees must be received by the applicable deadline in order for the family add on process to be completed. The Student must also be enrolled in the Student Health and Dental Plan.

IMPORTANT! The fees for Family Add-on are in addition to the student health and dental fee. 

Spouse Eligibility

Spouse is defined as your spouse by marriage or under any other formal union recognized by law, or your common-law spouse. 

Common-Law Spouse is a person who has been living with you in a conjugal relationship continuously for a period of not less than one year or who is the natural or adoptive parent of a child of who you are also the parent.

Spouse means the person who is a resident of Canada, and who is married to the student or a person of either sex who have been continuously cohabitating with the student for a period of at least one year and who is publicly represented as the student’s wife or husband.

Dependent Children Eligibility

Children are defined as your natural children, stepchildren, legally adopted children, and children for whom you/and or your spouse have been appointed as guardian(s) for all purposed pursuant to an Order of the Court. NOTE: if the child is your stepchild or your spouse’s adopted child or a child for whom your spouse has been appointed guardian, both your spouse and the children must reside with you full-time. In addition, the child must be:
  • Unmarried.
  • Under 21 years of age and not employed full-time, or
  • Physically or mentally incapable of self-support and became incapable to that extent while entirely dependent on the student for maintenance and support and while eligible under 21 years of age.

NOTE: Parents, Grandparents, Siblings are not eligible dependents.
