Spring students! If you missed the deadline, your next chance to apply will be in the spring term. The application period was from April 1st to May 15th, 2026.

International Emergency Medical Plan Opt-Out

Submit your International Emergency Medical Plan Opt-Out application before the deadline.

Make sure to submit your form by May 15th as the online form won't be accessible after that date.

Opt-Out Eligibility

International students with valid Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) may be eligible to opt-out of the International Emergency Medical Plan by the applicable term deadline.

How to Opt Out

To apply to Opt-Out, you must be assessed the mycanadaplan fee on your tuition, meet the eligibility criteria, have proof of coverage, and complete the online form before the applicable deadline.

Steps to Opt-Out
Important notes:
  • Students who opt-out of International Emergency Medical Plan will no longer be able to submit claims to this program. It is important for students to contact the SARDP Office should they have outstanding health expenses that occurred prior to obtaining AHCIP coverage. Opting out may result in those expenses not being covered by either program.
  • It is the student's responsibility to renew their Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) and maintain active AHCIP while studying in Alberta.
  • NO EXCEPTIONS will be made if your AHCIP is not renewed or valid at the time of opting out. It is the student's responsibility to pay the plan's mandatory fees.
  • Once you complete the International Emergency Medical Plan opt-out form, you will receive an automated email confirmation. Please keep this email for your records as it is your only proof of submitting an opt-out request.
  • Submitting this form does not confirm that you have successfully opted out. Your online opt-out is pending until the SARDP receives confirmation from the insurer that your coverage has been cancelled.
  • Eligible students must submit their applications before the applicable term deadline. NO EXCEPTIONS will be made if the deadline is missed.
