International Students Studying in Home Country Waiver

All international students are required to have emergency medical coverage while attending NSCC. Students who do not have coverage through the provincial health plan (MSI) are enrolled on the Emergency Health Insurance Plan.

Internationals students who are continuing their studies outside of Canada for the 2020-21 academic year have the option to waive the International Emergency Health Insurance Plan coverage for the 2020-21 benefit year.

Please review the waiver below in full. It is important to note that by signing this waiver you are waiving any entitlement to the Emergency Health Insurance Plan for the 2020-21 academic year.

If you plan to come to Canada at any point during the 2020-21 academic year, please contact the Benefits Plan Office prior to signing and submitting the International Study Abroad Waiver.

Once you have reviewed the waiver in full, please send a filled out and signed copy to the Benefits Plan Office at nsccplan@mystudentplan.ca

The deadline to submit this waiver for students beginning their program in September is September 30th. All other students have 30 days from their program start date to submit the waiver to the Benefits Plan Office. No exceptions can be made for submissions made after the deadline.

Opt Out


Students can opt-out of myvirtualdoctor based on their personal choice. Once you opt-out you will not be able to re-enroll in the program until your enrolment anniversary. The myvirtualdoctor opt-out is an annual opt-out. You will be re-enrolled next year on your enrolment anniversary and if you wish to opt-out again you will need to complete this Form prior to the applicable deadline.

The student is given one (1) opportunity to opt-out of myvirtualdoctor each year. All opt-out forms must be completed online and must be received by the applicable deadline. The student is only able to opt-out during their initial opt-out period or the opt-out period that corresponds with their enrolment anniversary.

NO EXCEPTIONS will be made if the deadline is missed. It is the student's responsibility to pay the plan fees, should they miss the applicable opt-out deadline.

Approval of the Student’s opt-out will result in the myvirtualdoctor fee being credited/or refunded according to the school's policy.

Health and Dental Opt Out


Already have coverage?

Coordinating multiple plans: If you are an eligible student and have comparable coverage you may wish to coordinate your plans. Benefits under the two plans can be coordinated to increase your coverage up to 100% of the actual expense(s) incurred. For example, following payment under this plan you can submit outstanding balances to the other plan for consideration. Find out more about coordination of benefits.

Opting Out of coverage: If you are an eligible student and have comparable health and/or dental coverage you may apply to opt-out of the plan(s). Each student is given one opportunity to opt-out of the health and/or dental plan(s) each year. All opt-out forms must be completed online or through the Student Benefits Plan Office and must be received within 30 days from the start date of your full-time program. You will not be able to opt-out of coverage at any other point during the school year. NO EXCEPTIONS will be made if the deadline is missed. It is the student's responsibility to pay the plan fees, should they miss the applicable opt-out deadline.

Please note: Nova Scotia Pharmacare is not a comparable plan and does not qualify as alternative coverage. If you are a student sponsored by the Department of Community Services, you will be automatically opted out from the Student Benefit Plan.

You have 30 days from the start date of your program to complete the opt-out process.

Attention First Nations and Aboriginal students:
If you do not have a policy number, please use your Band Name and Number.

Approval of your opt out will result in the plan fee being cancelled from your total tuition assessment or credited to your student account if it was already paid prior to the opt-out deadline.

Student Benefits Plan coverage is provided to eligible students automatically, except in certain circumstances where a student's enrollment status excludes them from automatic inclusion by the institution or due to a previous waiver on file. To opt into the Student Health and/or Dental plan(s), complete the sections below and submit this form. You will then be contacted by the NSCC Student Benefits Plan Office, via an email notification, of any required supporting documents and/or fees. All supporting document(s) and/or fees must be received by the applicable deadline in order for the re-enrollment process to be completed.

Student Opt-In

Student Benefits Plan coverage is provided to full-time eCampus students on an opt-in basis. To opt into the Student Health and/or Dental plan(s), complete the sections below and submit this form. You will then be contacted by the NSCC Student Benefits Office, via email notification, to confirm your enrollment. The Opt-In form must be submitted before the applicable deadline.
Full-time eCampus students who are opting into the Student Benefits Plan within the applicable deadline will have the fee added to their student account once the Opt-In form has been processed and approved by the Benefits Plan Office.

Loss of Coverage Opt-In

Students who opted out of the Student Benefits Plan and lost their alternative, comparable coverage can choose to opt into the plan for the remaining months of the benefit year. Students must submit the Opt-In form within 30 days of losing their coverage.
Students opting into the Student Benefits Plan based on loss of coverage will receive an email with fee payment details once the opt-in form has been processed by the Benefits Plan Office.

Family Add On


Coverage provided through the Student Health and Dental plan can be extended to a spouse and/or dependent(s). To add eligible dependent(s) complete the sections below and submit this form. You will then be contacted by the NSCC Student Benefits Plan Office, via an email notification, of any required supporting documents, fees and payment options. All supporting document(s) and fees must be received by the applicable deadline in order for the family add on process to be completed.

IMPORTANT: These fees are in addition to the student health and dental fee.

In order for international students to add their dependents to the Health & Dental Plans, they must be added to the Emergency Health Insurance Plan first.

International students who have missed the deadline to add dependents to their International Emergency Health Insurance plan have the option to purchase private coverage for their dependents.
