Eligibility Criteria

There are two international plans and as an eligible international student at Red River Polytechnic. The International Student Medical Insurance Plan - mycanadaplan, plus and the Emergency Transportation and Repatriation Insurance Plan. All international plans are mandatory.

The International Student Medical Insurance Plan - mycanadaplan, plus provides coverage in the event of an emergent medical occurrence for eligible international students enrolled at Red River College Polytechnic, such as an injury, illness, or accident, minimizing the costs associated with the effects of injury or ailments costs while studying in Canada. The coverage is comparable to doctor-insured services such as visiting a medical clinic or hospital.

Eligible students will be insured through the mandatory international plans; the International Student Medical Insurance Plan - mycanadaplan, plus and the Emergency Transportation and Repatriation Insurance Plan. The fees will be added to your student account and be part of the tuition when you are enrolled at Red River College Polytechnic.

International students are automatically enrolled in the International Student Medical Insurance Plan - mycanadaplan, plus if they meet the following criteria:

  • Are an international student; and
  • Must be registered and accepted in an eligible program as an international student; and
  • Are under the age of 65.

International students are automatically enrolled in the Emergency Transportation and Repatriation Insurance Plan if they have opted out of the International Emergency Insurance Plan with valid proof of your provincial coverage, Manitoba Health.

Enrollment Confirmation

If you are unsure about whether or not you are eligible for the International Student Medical Insurance Plan - mycanadaplan, plus or the Emergency Transportation and Repatriation Insurance Plan, please contact the Benefit Plan Office at redriverplan@mystudentplan.ca prior to any applicable deadlines.

International Wallet Card

Eligible students enrolled in the International Student Medical Insurance Plan - mycanadaplan, plus will receive their policy documentation by email which will include an international wallet card, policy summary and claim form. Students will receive this information at their Red River College Polytechnic email address.

If you are eligible for the International Student Medical Insurance Plan - mycanadaplan, plus and have not received the the policy documentation email, please contact the Benefit Plan Office at redriverplan@mystudentplan.ca .

Opting Out

International students who have a Manitoba Health Card through the Manitoba Provincial Health Care program can submit an online Opt-Out application to waive the International Student Medical Insurance Plan - mycanadaplan, plus by the applicable term deadline. You must upload to your application a picture or scan of your Health Card as proof of coverage when completing the online opt-out form.

Adding Dependents

If you will be traveling with dependents such as your spouse or children, it is possible to add them to your International Student Medical Insurance Plan - mycanadaplan, plus. You can submit an online Family Add-On application by the applicable deadline. You are required to pay the additional fee online by credit card if your application is approved.

Coverage Period

The coverage period is the length of time in which your International Student Medical Insurance Plan - mycanadaplan, plus policy is in effect. The International Student Medical Insurance Plan - mycanadaplan, plus provides 12 months of coverage. During this period, eligible students can use their benefits according to the limit amount defined per service.

All full-time international students are automatically assessed fees for 12 months coverage. The coverage commences on the 15th day of the month based on your term date.

Graduating Students will be enrolled in a 4-month term plan upon confirmation of their graduating date as provided by the Red River College International Department. Eligible students will be manually billed and receive a letter from the Red River College International Department.

Example:

If your program begins in August 28th, the coverage period starts on August 15th and ends on August 14th, following year.

Expiry Date

The expiry date of your benefits is the last day of the coverage period as shown on your international wallet card as received in your Welcome email.

Manitoba Health Provincial Health Care Program

Manitoba Health is a department within the Government of Manitoba. The department operates under the provisions of the legislation and responsibilities of the Minister of Health. The legislation, as well as emerging health and health care issues, guide the planning and delivery of health care services for Manitobans.

Manitoba Health also manages the insured benefits claims payments for residents of Manitoba related to the cost of medical, hospital, personal care, Pharmacare, and other health services. Most direct services are delivered through regional health authorities and other health care organizations; however, the department manages the direct operations of Selkirk Mental Health Centre, Cadham Provincial Laboratory, and provincial nursing stations.

If you as an international student or your spouse/common-law partner holds a work permit, you may be eligible to apply for Manitoba Health. Please contact Manitoba Health to find out if you are eligible for provincial health insurance. Examples of work permit an international student may hold include a coop/internship work permit or post-graduation work permit.
