Eligibility Criteria

The International Student Medical Plan - mycanadaplan Plan provides coverage in the event of an emergent medical occurrence for eligible international students enrolled at St. Francis Xavier University, such as an injury, illness, or accident, minimizing the costs associated with the effects of injury or ailments costs while studying in Canada. The coverage is comparable to doctor-insured services such as visiting a medical clinic or hospital.

Eligible students will be insured through the mandatory international plans; the International Student Medical Plan - mycanadaplan; and Transportation and Repatriation - Repatriation Insurance Plan. The fees will be added to your student account.

International students are automatically enrolled in the international plans if they meet the following criteria:

  • You are considered an international student if your permanent residence is outside of Canada and you do not have provincial medical coverage; and
  • You must be registered and accepted in an eligible program at St. Francis Xavier University; and
  • You are under the age of 65.

Enrollment Confirmation

If you are not sure if you meet the eligibility criteria, please visit MyData, & Banner Self Service and log in using your account. If you see the International Emergency Health Plan Fees included in your student account, you are covered by the International Student Medical Plan provided by the Students Union.

If you are unsure about whether or not you are eligible for the International Student Medical Plan - mycanadaplan or Transportation and Repatriation - Repatriation Insurance Plan, please contact your Benefit Plan Office at stfxplan@mystudentplan.ca prior to any applicable deadlines.

International Wallet Card

Eligible students enrolled in the International Student Medical Plan - mycanadaplan Plan will receive the plan card and the policy document by email. Students will receive this information at their St. Francis Xavier University email address.

If you are eligible for the International Student Medical Plan - mycanadaplan Plan and have not received the welcome email, please contact your Benefit Plan Office at stfxplan@mystudentplan.ca.

Opting Out

International students who have an MSI card through the Nova Scotia Provincial Health Care program can submit an online Opt-Out application to waive the International Student Medical Plan. You must submit proof of your Nova Scotia Health Card - MSI coverage when completing the opt-out form. The opt-out is an is an annual opt-out. You will be re-enrolled next year and if you wish to opt-out again you will need to complete a new opt-out form each school year.

Coverage Period

The coverage period is the length of time which your International Student Medical Plan - mycanadaplan policy is in effect. The International Student Medical Plan - mycanadaplan Plan provides 12 months of coverage for students that start in the Fall term and 8 months of coverage for students that start in the Winter term. During this period, eligible students can use their benefits according to the limit amount defined per service.

Effective Date

Eligible students will receive 12 months of coverage for Fall Term students and 8 months of coverage for Winter Term students starting with the first day of their arrival in Nova Scotia. Please contact your Benefit Plan Office at stfxplan@mystudentplan.ca to confirm your date of arrival.

Termination Date

The termination date of your benefits is the last day of the coverage period. For example, if the effective date of the plan is September 1st, the termination date is August 31st of the following year. If you want to confirm the termination date of your plan, please contact your Benefit Plan Office at stfxplan@mystudentplan.ca.

Nova Scotia Provincial Health Care Program

Nova Scotia's Health Provincial Health Care Programs are designed to provide eligible residents with coverage for medically required hospital, medical, dental, and optometric services with some restrictions. Students who are eligible for this coverage and submit an application will receive an MSI card which provides them access to the program.

Students with a Study Permit that is valid for a minimum of 12 months can apply for coverage on the first day of the thirteenth month following the date of arrival in Nova Scotia as a student (providing they have not been outside the province for more than 31 consecutive days except in the course of their studies). Example: If you arrived in Nova Scotia in the month of July, you would not become eligible to apply for MSI until the following August.

Students who arrive in Nova Scotia with a spouse or partner who holds a Work Permit that is valid for a minimum of 12 months may be eligible for MSI coverage immediately upon arrival in Nova Scotia.
